About WordTipper
Local journalism, by the people who live it
WordTipper is a platform for local storytelling. Your neighbours write the news, history, and characters of your town — and get paid when locals read their work.
Why we built this
Local newspapers have been closing for years. The stories that hold a community together — the council meeting, the bakery that just opened, the 90-year-old who still runs a marathon — were being told by nobody.
We wanted to change that. Not by hiring journalists, but by giving the people already living those stories a proper place to write them down, and a reason to keep going.
When a local business advertises on WordTipper, 70% of what they pay goes straight into that town's writer pot. At the end of each month, the most-read articles in that town share it out. The more people read your work, the more you earn.
What we believe
Local first
Articles about your street, your market, your pub — not national headlines repackaged.
Writers get paid
Ad revenue flows to the people who write the content that makes the platform worth reading.
No algorithms
The leaderboard is built by readers, not engagement bait. Read counts decide who earns.
Community owned
Readers follow towns and writers they care about. The platform grows because the community wants it to.
Where we're based
WordTipper started in Somerset, in the small towns of the South West of England. We launched with a handful of towns and a simple idea: what if the people who know a place best were also the ones writing about it?
We're expanding town by town. If your town isn't listed yet, get in touch — we'd love to add it.
WordTipper is an indie project. We don't have a VC round or a growth team — just a belief that local journalism matters and a platform trying to prove it. If you have feedback, ideas, or want to get involved, we genuinely want to hear from you.
Ready to get involved?
Whether you want to write about your town, advertise your business to a local audience, or just read what's happening nearby — there's a place for you on WordTipper.
